What Next After School?

Interestingly, the first time I was asked this question wasn’t in my penultimate or final year, it was in my 100 level.

When the question was thrown at me, I gave a response from the top of my head, and for some reason, I’ve been on track with that response till today.

The person who questioned me was in his finals, and guess how I got to know him too?

Through Ancestor (remember him from my last story?). When I was in 100l, this person came to my room to meet Ancestor, and I was introduced to him.

We talked a little and he advised me on some things and left that day.

The next time we met again, I don’t remember exactly if he told me to meet him in school or if we went to school together from the hostel.

All I remember is that he asked me the question when we were around the Engineering complex.

His name is Thaoban Adam, popularly known as Akbar (you can’t know him unless you are in my set or higher.)

When he asked me the question… “What next after school?”, I thought of it for a little while and responded: “I don’t know yet, but I plan to start a business while in school, and the money made from the business will be used to fund my Engineering career”.

If you follow me on WhatsApp, you will realize I’ve never talked about my business, and this brings up the question: “Which track did you say you are following again?”

Chill, let me explain.

In 100l, I started by selling memory cards. At that time, the retail price of 16 GB and 32 GB memory cards were 2500/3000 and 3500/4000 respectively.

On Aliexpress, 16GB was sold at N856 (I think), and 32 GB was around 1200/1400. Shipping to Nigeria was free.

I used to save in my 100l days, so I had a source I could remove money from.

I can’t recall the exact amount I had then, but I ordered 10 memory cards from Aliexpress and sold them at the hostel.

Oh, I just remembered now, before I entered school, I was a Jumia Agent. I used to help people to order on Jumia, and Jumia pays me a commission depending on the sales amount.

I was making an average of N1400 a month at that time 😂.

Moving on, I sold the memory cards a little cheaper than the market price. I was selling 16GB for N2,000 and 32GB for N2500.

I still have one of the memory cards in use today 😌… I sold quality.

I can still recall that Bro Waliyu invested in the business so that I could buy more at once. Me sef no small 😂.

200 level, I learnt how to import on 1688.com and started selling AirPods and flash drives.

One certain comrade scammed me of my precious N3,000 for an Airpod I sold to him. I’ve still not forgiven him till today even though I got to know later that he is my cousin😂. Dear Cousin Comrade, I go still collect my money.

Corona came, and I stopped selling entirely since we were no longer in school.

That was when I learnt copywriting, and lots of other things.

There was a period when I was just burning money trying to figure out things.

I can’t totally call it burning because I learnt from my mistakes. But one thing that really helped me was buying courses and learning from experts.

There was even a time that… the moment I received my pocket money, I would burn it on what I was doing at that time😂.

Only a few people like Usman (remember him from my previous story too?) knew about it.

I have no regrets whatsoever though because it’s paying off hugely now.

I have a business now but it’s not entirely open to the public because it’s not something everybody needs to know about before they patronize me or…

Let me put it this way, you probably have come across my business before, but you just don’t know I’m the one behind it.

In a few weeks, I will be completely done with school, and I have some big moves to make.

You will be seeing more of my writing now, and maybe in one of my write-ups, you will get to know more about my business.

Finally, because of school, I’ve not been applying or taking writing gigs, but I will be actively doing that now.

I’m not sharing this with you just for sharing sake, but I’m sharing it so you can pick one or two lessons.

The story is far far far far far more than this, but this is the maximum detail I can reveal at the moment.

For now, enjoy this one.

Peace Out.
